1 More Week Until Coming Back

Wow.

Come this weekend, I'd have already spent a month here in Ottawa. The first week seemed really slow, but now that we're done training at work and now we are just working on files, the workday passes by pretty fast. Once I get home, I snack a little, maybe check surf the 'net a little, watch CSI or play games, make dinner, eat dinner, more games/TV, then sleep. Weekends are just solo 48 hour gaming parties.

In a way, it's fun, 'cause I go to work, get paid, come home and play games.

In another way, it's not that great, because I'm not being very productive with my time away from work...I dropped my DE so I can prepare for SoA and be more relaxed. Well, I'm definitely more relaxed, but still haven't started studying for SoA yet, which, I really should start.

Been planning my next term's courses, and I think I'll go and try 6 courses upcoming term. While I was looking at my course selections, I realized that I can theoretically fit 2 Act Scis and 4 Stats courses into my schedule, which would be pretty beastly. For now, I'm ducking a Stats course and substituting it with PHIL 145. So 2 Act Sci, 3 Stats, and an Arts night class. I hope Men's cell isn't on Thursdays...can Paul or Chris confirm on when Men's cell will be next term?

Another week to go and I'll be coming back! Yay! I can come home and get together with family and friends. If everything goes on schedule I should be back in Mississauga sometime around noon on Friday Oct 8. In order to maximize my time, I kind of need some sort of confirmation on when and where the gaming get-together will be. I assume most, if not all of you guys will be in 'sauga for the Thanksgiving weekend. So if you guys can comment about your plans for that weekend, it'll be great (sorry about the subtlety). No real details needed, just give me an idea of when you guys will be in 'sauga. After I see where everyone will be at I'll likely post a proposed Thanksgiving weekend schedule (so much that I can do, not so much time...)

Oh, and apparently Shez is our new Waterloo mascot. Go Shez Go!

See you all in a week's time or so.

Carbs Makes You Smarter?!?!

This was the discussion at lunch between two of my fellow co-ops, Ed and Sabrina. Apparently, they figure that I'm smarter than they are, and apparently, they've figured out my secret to smartness...carbs. This amazing discovery was confirmed through 2 weeks of noticing my diet (no the kind that makes you skinny). This was likely the result of me pointing out in previous conversations that Sabrina would eat 1 filet of trout or salmon from Loblaws for 1 meal w/ a very small portion of rice, while I split the same size of filet into 3 meals mixing it into pasta and rice. Thus, to test their new found theory, Ed is going on a low-carb diet to see if he gets any dumber, and I think Sabrina is trying to eat more carbs to see if she'll get any smarter. I got quite amused from that conversation.

Actually, the conversation went on about brain stealing and marriage, but it wouldn't be funny typed out, more of one of those "gotta be there" (think I'm stealing this from Bao) kind of thing.

Got paid on Wednesday, and after reading Bao and Duy's blogs about how much Tales they've been playing, and will be playing this term, I decided I'll pick up my own copy of Tales of Symphonia and add that to my backlog of RPGs (actually, I might finish this game before going into my backlog, =P). Single player may not be as fun, but it'll probably be more challenging. At least I won't spend an hour looking around Tethe'alla for the guy to talk to to find that crystal thing to save Presea (or was it Collette?), he he (although we did fight a lot of battles because of that...hmmm...). Maybe I'll use a "who wants to live forever and who needs mages" kind of group, that was fun, heh.

On Friday all of us co-ops, along w/ our two supervisor/trainers and the department director, met with Melody's roomates for lunch buffet at an Indian restaurant near our place of work (in fact, it was a minute's walk away). There were two "buffet carts" worth of hot foods, a couple tray of deep-fried stuff like Samosas, about 6 to 8 trays of stuff that goes with rice, half vegetarian and half meaty (i.e. butter chicken), then there's rice and flat bread. There's also some desert and a salad tray. Overall the food was pretty good, I think better than the quality at Taj Palace. And the price was reasonable too, $10 for all you can eat.

It's the weekend, and you know what that means...hours upon hours of RPGs. I think I'll finish Skies before Tales...

About F***ing Time...

...that Bell sent us our modem, which was requested the day I moved in, which, for those of you who don't know, was Sept 5th.

Anyway, I've bashed Toronto Bell already w/ their IT incompetence. Seems Ottawa Bell works the same way too. 4-5 buisness days my butt. Whatever, the modem's here, I have Internet access, all's fine. I'm blogging now although I really should be sleeping for work, but I think this will be worth it.

Hm...so many things that I can blog about...I'll just write about whatever I can recall now and make amendments in future updates...

Work

Before coming here my answer to "what are you going to work on?" was "I don't know, some pension stuff for the government". Now my answer is "pension regulation for the government". So I wasn't too far off.

Had 2 weeks of training, where I learned all about how pension funding is regulated in the Income Tax Act, and how to calculate the liabilites in a given pension plan, and what additional rules are imposed on more "risky" plans, etc etc. So now I have a beginner's understanding to funding pension plans, kinda (I can crunch the numbers but can't do the investment and stuff).

So basically for this work term I'll probably be looking over various actuary's submission on contribution amounts to pension plans by employers, since pension contributions are tax deductible. I've already learned a lot, and the work's barely started. So that's good.

Work environment is great too. Like most people expect, since it's government, we do no work. Well, it's not exactly correct. We do work, and lots of it, and half the time the work is difficult. However, what we don't have are deadlines. Thus, we can go on at our own pace, and if I feel like taking a week to finish one file, I can. I probably won't get a good evaluation out of it, but I won't really get in trouble because of it. So that's good.

The people in the office are all very nice, and the two guys training us are really taking a lot of time out of their work hours to make sure we do our work correctly. For now they'll be double-checking our file work and in a couple months we'll do a couple more days of training. They're also good to talk with, one talks about TV shows and stuff and the other will teach you a lot if you ask. So best of both worlds.

The other three co-op students there (we all do the same work, but we each get our own files) are really cool as well. I think we'll have a good work term together. Sabrina's one of my roomates, so we go and leave work together (more on the need for that later). I knew her through Act Sci classes in 2B, and she happens to be good friends with a few of the Woodlands Waterloo people that I knew in highschool but didn't keep in touch in University (well, we weren't close in highschool anyway). There's Ed, he's a real interesting fellow. Kind of a joker and playful guy, so he makes the workplace more fun. Then there's Melody, she's an interesting blend of personalities: jock + hard working nerd. We all agree (Sabrina, Ed, and I) that if we start a company, we'd hire Melody to be the workhorse.

Overall I think this co-op term will be very enjoyable and a good experience. I'd like to return if I can, but the main problem would be Ottawa being a bit too far from Mississauga and Waterloo. Especially since the next work term will be summer, where pretty much everyone will be in 'sauga. So I'm hard pressed in deciding whether I should go back if I'm given the opportunity. Oh well, we'll see about it.

Housing

So like, I pay $485 rent/mo all utils except phone and internet included in downtown Ottawa. Sounded pretty good...until we got there. Well, it only looks bad on the outside. The reason being that our neighbourhood is surrounded by shelter houses on the other side of the street. So, there are always homeless-looking people hanging out on the sidewalk, and they just look intimidating. All in all, however, they won't bother any of us as long as we don't go over and give them money or something. So it's more of a psychological factor than anything. Case in point, when our landlord's husband tried knocking on the door, I got "scared off" and just ignored him, since we didn't get any notice about the visit. Well, they called one of my roomate's cell and left a message, but he wasn't home yet. Inside the house is fine, 2 washrooms, my room is about the same size as the one I have at home, slightly smaller. Fits my TV, so that's all I need. House is really close to the bus stop to work as well, so everything worked out fine. But since our neighbourhood is kind of ghetto never-the-less, Sabrina and I go to work and come home together, more security for her I guess.

Landlord wants us to clean often so we just made up a schedule to make it look like we'd be cleaning the place, he he.

Cooking

Finally got to gain some experience in cooking. When I was in Waterloo, I'd go home too often and my Mom would either make stuff or buy stuff for me to take back to 'Loo. Now, since 'sauga is a good 4 hours drive away, I'm not going back every week (well I could, but I'd spend like 1/2 day and the rest on the road, which is totally pointless).

So every week I'd go to the local Loblaws nearby and get a week's worth of fruits, vegetables, and meats, along with miscellaneous purchases here and there, like yogurt and mayonnaise.

Then, since I have nothing to do when I'm home, I have time to think of dishes to make. Already I've successfully (at least for my own eating) "beefaroni" using KD and everything else from scratch and several chinese style chicken dishes (basically copying what I recall my Mom would cook up). I have some interesting avenues to explore in the world of cookery, for example the other day Ed made a mushroom "strudel" using Pillsbury Dough Boy dough, so I'm gonna try that sometime.

Hopefully, by the time the work term is over, I'd have at least a dozen or so recipes under my belt so I can cook some decent stuff in Waterloo or even at home =P

DE

I signed up for a DE course.

I'm gonna cower and drop it, now that I have Internet.

Reason? I'm feeling lazy and don't want to do lots of work after work.

CSI

Didn't have anything to do on Labour Day after moving in, conveniently spike TV had their CSI week long marathon start that day. And on Labour Day I watched about 11 episodes of CSI Las Vegas. From there on I'm pretty much hooked onto the show. I really like it, I like all that forensics stuff, so scientific and neat. And the characters have nice development through the seasons as well, and the cases are usually interesting. I'm seriously considering getting all the DVDs, although I don't know if CSI has much re-watch value, since on second viewing you already know all the secrets and who did it and all that...But we shall see...

Games

So, if you don't think that besides going to work and eating and sleeping, I'd spend my nights and entire weekends playing video games since I'm cowering out of my DE course which in effect means I have jack squat to do besides going to work 9-5, then you probably don't know me that well.

I only brought up my Gamecube console and most of my PS2 games (ones that I decided I'd play), 'cause I figured I'd get a new PS2 in Ottawa (since my current one is working only like, half the time). However, as of now I still haven't got the PS2 yet. Part of the reason being that I don't really want to blow another $200 when the one I have at home still kinda works, the other part of the reason is because I'm prefectly fine w/ the Gamecube for now.

Basically all I've played so far is Smash Melee and Skies of Aracadia, and I've only started SoA a few days ago. Prior to that was just a lot of Smash, playing against level 9 computers, getting 1-P trophies, getting better BTT times, etc. Since I won't be able to Smash against humans here (as none of my housemates or co-workers seem to smash), I'd still like to keep my skill level relatively up so I don't get too rusty and dusted when I come back by you guys =P So I "practice" against level 9 computers, working on timing like L-canceling and wavedashing and shine spiking and such. The new MTotD was something I found when practicing around up here in Ottawa.

As for Skies of Arcadia, it's not too bad of a game, I'm 16 hours in, although massively overleveled, as I spent at least half the game time leveling here and there. Basically I was greedy and wanted a lot of spells for my characters, so I end up overleveling. I'd probably just progress through the game normally until I really need the levels again.

From what I read off of DB's blogs, they've finished the Tales of Symphonia game that Jia, DB, and I were playing quite a bit of in the week or so before I left for Ottawa. And now the 'Loo crew is going through another game from scratch, which likely means by the time my work term is over, most if not all of you would have played and finished the game probably at least once or twice. So, I might just go and get ToS and play it by myself, although I might need to overlevel a bit to compensate for the difference between AI and human players, since I'm pretty sure there were some battles that we managed to beat would not be much more difficult if only one human was playing (Sylph battle comes to mind).

So between SoA and possibly ToS, I should be able to hold out until I come back to get my PS2 up, where I can perhaps play my 10 or so PS2 RPGs that are on my backlog list.

When I'll Come Back

Some of you guys might be wondering about this, and the first time I'm coming back will most likely be Thanksgiving weekend. I can work 9 days out of 10 at work as long as I work about an hour more each day in the 9 days, so I will be taking Friday October 8th off, then I'll have a 4 day weekend from Oct 8 - Oct 11. Probably driving back early Friday morning, and drive back sometime Monday. So, since you guys all have the Thanksgiving weekend off, someone organize a gaming thing, 'cause I miss playing games w/ other ppl =P But I'll need to spend some of that weekend w/ family as well, but I think a usual Saturday gather would be do-able for me. wink wink, nudge nudge

After that I'll have every other Friday off, and I'll switch a day here and there so that I have a 4-day weekend in November as well, since apparently I get Rememberance Day off (which conveniently lies on a Thursday this year). So I'm most probably gonna be back the weekend of Rememberance Day although I'd be there Thurs-Sun. But maybe I can come up to 'Loo that weekend, heh.

Other than those set in stone dates, I dunno if I'll be back any other times. Perhaps I'll come back on one of the 3-day weekends I'll have every other week, but that'll likely depend on things like weather and how busy I'll get from work.

But set aside a day on Thanksgiving and Rememberance Day weekends if you guys can, I don't want to come back to 'sauga just to sit at home all day =P

All You Can Eat Wings

Tonight after finally getting our modem, which we had to drive 20 minutes to the Purolator office to pick up, and we almost didn't get it because whoever tried to drop off the modem at our house didn't leave us a package slip, we went for all you can eat wings at the nearby Hooters.

Now, considering that it's all you can eat wings for 10.99, you'd think there'd be more people at the place. Instead, the place was only about 80% full, which was kind of surprising, as I'd expect more Ottawa U students to drop by for wings, as we all know places such as Fiascos and Morty's are packed on cheap wing nights.

The wings weren't too bad, you order them by plates, so first plate they give you 10 wings, then 8 wings on each successive order. I think you can only order 1 flavour per plate. The wings also came w/ curly fries, so all those potatoes fills you up (although you're not obliged to finish your fries...). In terms of flavour and texture they were kind of like Morty's, batter fried and sauce on top. However, they were at most half the size of the Morty wings. With drinks and tip and all the meal came out to $15, not bad for all you can eat.

I guess that's it...for now...time to do my Melee Tip and then get some sleep for work tomorrow, lol.
